The explanation requiring the least physics is the existence of the same story in the Manchester Guardian (ref), from 5 years ago. Now, they are running that story again. If it was at all useful, they would have a new and improved story.
But, between "people who are gullible", "people who can't do math", and "people who obnoxiously say things like << it's always worth trying everything >>", this has become a zombie idea.
