"real books"

Hide hard words

The other day a woman asked if I only wrote°hard word children°hard word’s books or if I also wrote°hard word “real” books. It was said°hard word with absolutely no malice°hard word and if you don°hard word’t spend°hard word tons°hard word of time in storytelling°hard word land/the planet of publishing°hard word, I get why you would word it that way. But it gave°hard word me pause°hard word because it’s far from the first time such a question has been asked to me, with the understandable-yet-false°hard word reasoning that books for adults are real and books for children°hard word are not°hard word.

She is partially°hard word correct. But, in many important ways, books for children°hard word are NOT real books, and pretending°hard word that they are (or should be) is harmful°hard word.

🔥 her argument that it is a real book because the pictures are pretty, proves°hard word my point.

🔥 she might as°hard word well talk about the inescapable°hard word pathos°hard word of the gastronomic°hard word gospel°hard word of Sam-I-Am°hard word.

The first argument 💡 and one sufficient°hard word to "win the argument", though insufficient°hard word to explain the concept°hard word is that the primary°hard word purpose of books, through about the third grade°hard word level 💡 as°hard word always, the concept°hard word of grade°hard word level is flawed°hard word; but commonly understood°hard word well enough to be useful°hard word is to teach language. Trying to use the books to also teach deep concepts°hard word will cause them to fail°hard word at both tasks.

The books are supposed°hard word to be simple. Pleas°hard word that children°hard word should be exposed°hard word to complex themes°hard word or are capable°hard word of understanding complex themes°hard word ... are wrong, and should not°hard word be indulged°hard word.

As°hard word far as°hard word children°hard word’s books are real books because children°hard word are real people ... I must invoke°hard word Guild°hard word Law.

As°hard word far as°hard word Children°hard word’s books are specifically°hard word written°hard word to be read by a section°hard word of society without political or economic°hard word power. ... no. I must invoke°hard word Guild°hard word Law again.
